That's a good question with a simple answer. We are to share with others 'what we have seen and heard' God do as we make our way through our everyday lives. There are some great examples of this principle in the New Testament.

In the book of Acts (vv 16-22) we find some befuddled religious leaders in Jerusalem wondering what to do with Peter and John after a crippled man was healed while they (Peter and John) were preaching on the streets of Jerusalem soon after Pentecost.

Acts 4: 16-22

16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name." 18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. 20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard." 21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

Like the Samaritan woman at the well, mentioned in the thread, "Why should we share our stories?", Peter and John felt compelled to tell - they couldn't help it any more than the woman could help share her experience with Jesus at the well. Neither did they embellish the story. They just told what they had seen and heard.

In Mark, chapter 5,  there's the story of the demon-possessed man whose demons were cast out of him and into a heard of pigs. Local observers to the event told everyone they knew what they had seen and heard. The man wanted to follow Jesus from that moment, but Jesus told him to go home and share with his family what the Lord had done for him. He told his family and a lot of other folks what he had received from the Lord.

We even have Jesus healing folks and telling them NOT to blab and they do anyway. (See Mark 7)

Then we have the Apostle John reminding readers of his letters that what he wrote was what he had seen and heard, not fables or conjecture. (see 1 John)

How quick we are to talk excitedly about everything else we see and hear! How much of that is not just 'sharing' but gossip? Think about it for a minute or two then ask yourself this question: What have you shared lately about what God is doing in your life?

For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! — 1 Corinthians 9:16

The Apostle Paul felt compelled to preach the gospel. When we become believers, the Holy Spirit plants within us the desire to share the gospel! So what is it that we are to preach? Well, what did Paul preach as the gospel?

1 Corinthians 15 sums up Paul's preaching of the gospel.

15:1 Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, 15:2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you – unless you believed in vain. 15:3 For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received – that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, 15:4 and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures, 15:5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 15:6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 15:7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.

Paul's four elements of the gospel message (the core of Christianity):

1. Christ died for our sins.

2. He was buried.

3. He was raised on the third day.

4. He appeared to many.

Christ's death and resurrection are at the heart of the gospel. The fact that He was buried verified His death, and the fact that He appeared to others verified His resurrection.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon once preached a sermon titled "What is it to Preach the Gospel?" In that sermon he stated that:

"To Preach the Gospel is...

To Tell The Truth About God

To Tell The Truth About Man

To Tell The Truth About Christ

To Tell The Truth About Salvation"
